Off to the races

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

This is a big weekend.  Sunday is the Vancouver Half Marathon.  Good luck to all of the runners who have been working so hard.  The weather forecast looks perfect!  I will be thinking of you.

As for me, I am also off to the races.  I will be racing in Desert Winds Adventure Race described on the official web site as:

The Desert Winds 24 – The Hardcore 24 Hour Adventure Race
What: Mountain Biking, Trekking/Running, Swimming
Where: Lake Mead, Nevada and Arizona

There is a really cool feature I just discovered on their website.  You can watch teams during the race!  We are Team Verve.  Watch us race here.  It looks like there are 15 teams registered.  There is going to be some serious competition.  Why are we named Team Verve?  Here is the definition of Verve: Energy and enthusiasm in the expression of ideas, especially in artistic performance or composition: The revival lacked the verve of the original musical.  Vitality; liveliness.

I am nervous, anxious and excited. I will file a full report with photos upon my return.

Have a great weekend and good races this weekend!

Swine Flu

Swine flu public health
emergency update

As you are probably aware by now, U.S. health officials declared a public health emergency on Sunday after confirming swine flu cases in five states: California, Kansas, New York, Ohio, and Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deployed staff domestically and internationally to work with officials in those states, Mexico, Canada, and the World Health Organization.

The emergency declaration is standard operating procedure and gives federal, state, and local government agencies access to funds and resources for testing and medications. While they continue their evaluation, CDC offers the following tips on their web site for What You Can Do to Stay Healthy:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

A special note regarding children

It is important to remind children to take necessary precautions to reduce the likelihood of spreading this flu and other diseases.  The Mayo Clinic offers some useful guidelines for proper hygiene on their web site. The Kids Health Organization also offers talking points that may help communicate to children the importance of washing their hands:

Bridezillas on a Diet

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

New York Times

Forget the flowers, reception hall and wedding dress. For many brides-to-be, losing weight is the most important part of the wedding plan.

wedding dressThe dress can be altered to fit, but is extreme dieting a healthy strategy? (Stephanie Keith for The New York Times)

More than 70 percent of brides-to-be want to lose weight before their wedding day, according to a new study from Cornell University. To reach the perfect wedding-day weight, more than one-third of them use extreme dieting tactics such as diet pills and fasting. And while most of us buy clothes that fit, about one in seven brides-to-be buys a bridal gown that is one or more dress sizes smaller than she normally wears.

“Most women engaged to be married idealize a wedding weight much lighter than their current weight,” wrote co-author Lori Neighbors, assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She conducted the study while a graduate student at Cornell’s College of Human Ecology.

The study, published online from a forthcoming issue of the journal Appetite, surveyed 272 engaged women. The women surveyed ranged in age from 18 to 51, although the vast majority were under the age of 30. More than half of the women were normal weight, but 24 percent were overweight and 20 percent were obese, based on standard body mass index measures. Just 2 percent fell into the underweight category.

Dr. Neighbors found that 91 percent of the women were worried about their weight, reporting that they wanted to lose weight or were actively trying to prevent weight gain. By comparison, national data show that about 62 percent of similarly aged women have the same concerns.

Among the 70 percent of women who were trying to lose weight, the average desired loss was about 21 pounds, not counting three women in the group who were trying to lose more than 100 pounds each.

One surprising finding was that more than 90 percent of brides who wanted to lose weight said they were drinking more water. Extra water consumption was also common among the women trying to maintain their weight. The study authors note that some wedding Web sites promote water as an appetite suppressant, although it wasn’t clear if the brides were drinking water to feel full, avoid eating other foods or displace higher calorie beverages.

Nearly half the brides-to-be were willing to adopt extreme dieting strategies to reach their goal weight by their wedding day. Among extreme dieters, skipping meals and taking unprescribed diet pills and supplements were reported most frequently. About 10 percent of the women used liquid diets, while a fraction of the women started smoking, took laxatives or induced vomiting in order to lose weight.

The prevalence of extreme dieting behavior among brides-to-be is important because rapid weight loss usually isn’t maintained. But the study authors note that because brides-to-be are highly motivated to lose weight, doctors should use an upcoming wedding as an opportunity to discuss more healthful weight loss and eating behaviors.

At the time of the study, the women were still about six months or more away from their big day. But the average weight loss achieved was already about eight pounds, although the numbers varied widely.

“If these losses were maintained after marriage, they would be significant weight management achievements,” the authors noted. “Given the pressures of the wedding and beginning a new life as a couple, engaged women should be encouraged to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle rather than striving for a fleeting number on a scale or a temporary dress size.”

Boutique Gyms Booming – Naomi and Christi in the news!

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

April 8, 2009 – Fox KCPQ 13 News

When you think of the gym, what comes to mind?  Rows of treadmills, bicycling machines or weight benches in a huge, warehouse-like space? Some smaller, so called boutique gyms are really starting to spring up and give the big boys a run for their money.

Don’t let the name mislead you. Boutique gyms are all about breaking a sweat. Forget the fashion show ladies – you know what we’re talking about.

“You’ve got to watch what you wear.  You get to get dressed up to go to the gym,” says Andrea Dalaly.

Then there’s the confusion.  Matt Jarvis sees it all the time.

“They walk in the door and don’t know what to do, so they either walk on the treadmill or stay away from the machines, or they stay home and the membership keeps billing you every single month.”

But that’s where these boutique gyms are different on two fronts. One – many offer monthly sessions rather than memberships. Take Vera Fitness for example.

“When their session expires, 95% of our clients actually renew,” says Patricia Diaz-Kismarton, co-founder of Vera Fitness.

Two – since these centers emphasize small group or personal training, Diaz-Kismarton says, “normally if you want personal training, you need to pay $80 or $90 per hour. Here you get in groups of four and you share the trainer.”

But personal trainer Christi Masi says make sure that while you try to save money, you don’t waste your time.

“Doing something you really like and enjoy is the key for going long term success.  It doesn’t have to be the hardest. It doesn’t have to promise instant results,  but if you like it and you look forward it, it’s the perfect thing for you,” says Masi.

One workout option is the ever popular pilates.  Also, something called Crossfit – a short-burst, high energy, 30 minute workout – is also pretty popular.

For you high intensity folks, try a personalized boot camp.  Christi Masi runs a few of those and says the things her clients like most about them is the sense of comradery everyone feels.

“If you’re with a group or someone there to motivate you, you’re willing to do it and work your hardest. When you’re on your own, you do that,” says Masi.
