Sweatin’ to the 80s

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I had a crush on Scott Baio in Charles in Charge, I lived for HyperColor, and I caused severe damage to my hair from crimping. It’s true. I wholeheartedly threw my childhood-self into every cringe-worthy 80s trend.

And, I’ll be the first to admit that I still have a soft spot for that decade. In my opinion, no dance party playlist is complete without some 80s tunes. So, in honor of my favorite decade, I’ve pulled together some similarly inspired work out pieces (with nary a leg warmer).

Ahoy! Nautical-Inspired Athletic Gear

By Alexis our bridal bootcamp fasionista!

Maybe I’m craving a return to my New England roots, or maybe my recent desire to sail around the Caribbean is channeling its way into my wardrobe. Either way, I’m going through a serious stripe phase and subsequently an obsession with nautical-inspired items.

This trend was all over the runway for spring. Injecting some sassy sailor attitude into your workout gear can add some pep and interest to the oh-so- expected black pants and t-shirt combo. No need to rock this look from head to toe – a striped hoodie or tank and grey capri sweats will do the trick.

Fitness Follicles

I’m not really the kind of gal to primp pre-workout, but I am always on the lookout for double duty hair accessories that I can wear both during and after a sweat session.

The Reversible Training Beanie by SmartWool ($25) is lauded by reviewers as having excellent wicking capabilities. Plus, it’s super comfortable and perfect for morning walks and runs with the stubborn Seattle summer still months away.

I stumbled upon a gold mine of adorable hand-made headbands and hair bobbles on etsy.com.  I love the cloth covered button hair ties that exude girly charm. Australia-based HMC Designs has a host of options on which you can stock up for $7.

Fitness fashion favorites lululemon, lucy and Athleta also have a few headbands to choose from – all of which claim are no slip – my personal workout hair woe.

What’s your go to accessory for doo when you’re heading to the gym?

Random Fitness Finds By Alexis Hoverter our Bridal Fitness Fashion Diva

Bridal bootcamp taught me a lot about how to update my workouts so I burn more calories and can better target my trouble zones (stubborn bra fat, anyone?).

But, post wedding when I returned to the gym, I quickly discovered that my new found methods got me moving a lot more – and basically made it impossible to wear headphones without them falling out mid jump rope.
earbuds
Enter BudFits. They’re super cheap and essentially superglue my ear buds onto my ear no matter how many jump squats or burpees I do. They’re also completely removable and extremely comfortable.

A much more high-tech development in random workout gear is Rusty’s new ‘Set It Straight’ sweatshirt. It’s got earbuds built into the drawstrings of the hood and a jack for your MP3 player in its pocket. Plus, it’s washable.

The hoodie will be released for sale in May of this year for $50 and can be purchased at PacSun.com  and is perfect for my upcoming spring jogs.

It’s in the Bag

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

You’ve crafted the perfect work-day ensemble. You actually feel put together for once. The accessories, the coat, the shoes – it’s all working. And then you sling your gym bag over your shoulder. You know, the one you got from that seminar that has the sponsor’s logo emblazoned on the side. Can you hear the record screech?

Not that there’s anything wrong with grabbing free swag every now and again, but there’s no point in sacrificing a personal wardrobe triumph with a dumpy gym bag. Plus, carrying an attractive tote may actually get you more (dare I say it?) excited about working out.

Check out the smattering of bags I found while scouring the Web. They’re at a range of price points and they cover a multitude of styles. Show off your unique personality and style – even when you’re workout bound.
