Congratulations! You’re getting married. The good news is, you now have a partner in life! Along with so many other things, that means all your healthy and not so healthy habits over time, will start to rub off on each other. But, not to worry. Having a partner to work out with can hold you accountable, make workouts more enjoyable, and motivate you to push harder and further than you ever thought possible. Here are a few tips that will help you and your partner stay on track for the healthiest happily ever after possible.
Have Shared Goals
Whether it’s attending Weight Watchers together, switching off cooking healthy meals, or setting work out dates in the calendar, having shared goals gives you something to work on together. Set backs seem easier to overcome, and successes are so much sweeter with someone you love by your side.
Respect Boundaries
If your partner enjoys running solo or a pick up game of soccer with friends, don’t force your way into what’s already working for them. Spending time apart is good for your health and your marriage. If you know certain things are off limits when it comes to your work out or your marriage, respect that. Your partner will love you all the more for it.
Support & Encouragement Are Key
When your partner is on track, it can be easy to notice and appreciate their accomplishments. When they’re struggling to stay on track, it can be a challenge to know how to best support them. But, one thing is certain: being positive is the key to success. That’s true in reaching your goals. That’s true in helping your partner reach theirs. And, that’s true in marriage in general.
Know Each Others Strengths and Weaknesses
Great teams know what each player brings to the table. This is certainly the case in a great marriage. If you can have a box of treats in the pantry and still exercise stealth self control but your partner can’t; leave the box at the office...or better yet don’t buy it. Likewise, if you know your partner is most energized for working out in the morning, do what you can to help them get up and get to the gym in the AM.
It all comes down to this: you’re a team now. What are you doing to be the very best team you can be?
