Seattle wedding trainer buffs up brides-to-be

Patti Payne

If you see a group of women in white net veils running on the streets of Seattle, don't start thinking they are runaway brides. They are more likely to be customers of Seattleite Christi Masi, also known as the wedding trainer (http://www.theweddingtrainer.com/).

Masi, whose business offers regular The Healthy Bride Classes in Seattle, Kitsap County, Tacoma and Eastside areas, finds her barely year-old business booming.

She kicked it off with the running of the brides in last year's Seafair race and will have her brides-in-training do the same thing this year. Her workouts are attended by brides, and even by women renewing their vows.

Masi, who climbs mountains for kicks, hasn't always been a wedding trainer. She worked 11 years for Starbucks, starting in the early years when the coffee giant had only 15 stores. "I learned so much from Starbucks," says Masi. "They did so much right."

So the Starbucks work ethic and maybe even the caffeine boost have become part of her business getting bridal bodies in shape for, well, just in the best shape of a bride's life, with cardio and resistance training, 12 brides at a time. "It's women with a common focus and common goals and they enjoy each other's company," she says.

Sharon Wallace is one happy customer who has been working out in the Healthy Bride classes since last fall. Wallace, who works in the bill collections industry, says the goal was to form "great arms for my strapless gown." Turns out she now has biceps that rival those of her husband-to-be, Ron Beslow. "He's really tall and skinny and I keep comparing muscles. I've never been in such good shape."

Would she be able to pick him up and carry him over the threshold on their wedding day? "It's not like that, but I am buff and I actually could," she laughs.

Watch out. Now Masi has made a Healthy Bride Boot Camp DVD and is working on a book.
